Services
The department offer a full range of malignant and non-malignant haematological services up to BCSH Level 2, and has close links with the Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield which provides the tertiary Level 3 and 4 services (ie Bone Marrow Transplantation). We are part of the North Trent Cancer Network through which centralised diagnostic services and regional therapeutic MDTs operate.
Our in-patient facilities include a 12 bedded ward with 6 isolation rooms for the care of neutropaenic patients receiving intensive chemotherapy. We run 4 general haematology clinics a week, and various specialist clinics at various times.
The department also provides oversight of the hospitals Blood Transfusion and Anticoagulation services, authorisation and clinical comments on specialist tests such as haemoglobinopathy and coagulation screens, blood film morphology reporting and oversight of the Haematology Laboratory.
Dr Alfred also provide a tertiary Photopheresis service for patients with graft-vs-host disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
Student experience
We aim to provide as broad an experience in the specialty as possible given the constraints of a very short time spent in our department. Students are involved in ward rounds, out-patient clinics and attend our bone marrow biopsy list. Time is split with Sheffield where case histories are taken and presented.
