Cannulation

LOCATION:
The Vascular Access Team Office are generally out and about on the wards, when you are due to join the Team, please attend the Phlebotomy Department on B Level, junction 4 at your time and the receptionist will point you in the direction of their office.  Any problems you can contact them on the extension number below, to find out where to meet them.
 
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
We are a small team whom cover the whole Trust for patients requiring/have access from cannulas to lines.
  
WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE/DO AT THE UNIT:
You will be attached to a member of the VAT team who will be carrying out either: 
  • Cannulation - Shown the correct procedures and techniques to ensure that you are competent to then carry out practical. 
  • Surveillance – A chance to see different lines that are placed in patients and how we look after / manage them including dressing changes, taking blood cultures and bloods from them. 
  • Placing lines – Specialist nurses placing midlines and PICC lines. 
  • Ultrasound – Specialist nurses and TAPs using ultrasound to obtain bloods or place a cannula.  
 All the above will depend on staffing levels and work load on the day.
