Gastroenterology & Endocrinology/Diabetes

LOCATION:
Ward A5, A Level, Junction 3

BRIEF DESCRIPTION/WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE:
An opportunity to spend the day on Ward A5 shadowing the Gastroenterology or the Endocrinology & Diabetes Team.  Join the Ward Round which starts at 9am then remain on the ward for the remainder of the day accompany the F1's and the other student based on A5 to review patients.  Take histories and examinations from the patients.

Gastroenterology: We assess and manage patients presenting with a wide range of gastroenterological problems; liver pancreatic and bile duct disease.  The gastroenterology service benefits from our Specialist Nurses who support our indigestion/heartburn and inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Diabetes and Endocrinology: We assess and manage patients presenting with a wide range of problems:
Diabetes - all types of diabetes; acute and long term complications including DKA, HHS, diabetic foot.  The service has both in-patient and community diabetes specialist nurses and a dedicated Diabetes Education and Resource Centre.
Endocrinoloy - We manage all DGH-type endocrinology including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pituitary disease.  Endocrinology is a predominantly out-patient based specialty.  Opportunities for physical examinations in clinics are currently limited because most are telephone clinics.
