The Clinical Supervisor should:
- Understand their responsibilities for patient safety
- Be fully trained in the specific area of clinical care
- Supervise the foundation doctor’s day-to-day clinical and professional practice
- Offer a level of supervision necessary to the competences and experience of the trainee and tailored for the individual trainee
- Make sure that the foundation doctor has access to an appropriate range and mix of clinical situations
- Ensure that no trainee is required to assume responsibility for or perform clinical, operative or other techniques in which they have insufficient experience and expertise
- Ensure that trainees only perform tasks without direct supervision when the supervisor is satisfied that they are competent so to do; trainee and supervisor should be aware of their direct responsibilities for the safety of patients in their care
- Support the assessment process incorporating CBDs, Mini CEX, DOPS and Mini PATs
- Consider whether it is appropriate (particularly out of hours) to delegate the role of clinical supervisor to another senior member of the healthcare team. In these circumstances the individual must be clearly identified to both parties and understand the role of the clinical supervisor. The named clinical supervisor remains responsible and accountable overall for the care of the patient and the trainee
- Offer appropriate careers advice
- The clinical supervisor should have enough time available in their schedule to carry out this role appropriately
- The foundation doctor will be placed with a clinical supervisor (who may also be the educational supervisor) for each of their placements
- They should:
- Be appropriately trained to teach, provide feedback and undertake competenceAssessment, to trainees in the specialtyBe trained in equality and diversity and human rights best practice.
Educational Supervisors

The Educational Supervisor will be responsible for:
- Regular formal appraisals, initial, mid-term and end of placement meetings (initial within 2 weeks of start of placement) providing regular feedback to the trainee on their progress
- Developing a learning agreement and educational objectives with the trainee which are mutually agreed and is the point of reference for future appraisal
- Supporting the foundation doctor in developing their e-portfolio, reviewingwork based assessments (CBDs, DOPS, Mini CEX ) and giving feedback on the Mini PAT
- Making sure that the foundation doctor understands and gets involved in theassessment process
- Providing the appropriate training opportunities for foundation doctors to learn and achieve the necessary competences
- Being the first point of contact for the foundation doctor who has concerns or problems with their training
- Contacting the FTPD and DPGME should the level of performance of a trainee give rise for concern
- Their educational role locally to the FTPD and DPGME
- Offering appropriate careers advice

- Be adequately prepared for the role and have an understanding of educational theory and practical educational techniques
- Be trained to offer educational supervision and undertake appraisal and feedback
- Undertake training in competence assessment for specialty training
- Be trained in equality and diversity.
