This information should give you a brief introduction to the Department, its staff, their work and the hospital in general.
The purpose of the department is to see General Surgery, Breast, Upper GI, Lower GI, Colorectal and Vascular patients providing a full range of outpatient, endoscopy and in-patient elective and emergency surgery.

Hospital Structure
The work of the hospital is spread between five Divisions: Family Health, Emergency Care, Integrated Medicine, Surgery and Clinical, and Support Services. Each Division is headed by a Divisional Director who is directly accountable to the Trust Board, a Head of Nursing, a General Manager, a Finance Business Partner and an HR Business Partner
The Surgical Directorate contains general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery, anaesthetics and theatres, endoscopy and rheumatology.

Nursing Staff
The Clinical Governance Matron for Surgery and Urology is Rose Davis and the other surgical matron for the ward is Jane Pearce. There is also Shireen Say for unscheduled care. The ward nurses are augmented by a cadre of clinical nurse specialists all of whom have their offices on the B4/5 spine corridor or B4 itself.
There are 3 breast CNS, 2 colorectal CNS including a specialist functional bowel nurse practitioner and 1 UGI specialist nurse. There are 2 nurse consultant endoscopists and an endoscopist nurse practitioner. There are 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners currently undergoing training.
Wards
General Surgery patients are admitted onto Wards B4 and B5 located at Junction 3 on B level and within close proximity to the main theatres. Breast patients are admitted to B11 which is the Gynaecology Ward. Some general surgery patients may also be on Sitwell Ward which is primarily the Urology Ward.
Endoscopy
The Endoscopy Unit is located on C level and has recently been refurbished to create single sex accommodation and meet recommendations that meet JAG accreditation.
Surgical Assessment Unit
The Surgical Assessment unit is located on B5 and accepts direct referrals from the GPs as well as from A&E. It has a male and a female bay each with a dedicated staff nurse. Once management plans are in place they are re-located to B4 and B5 within 24h under the named consultant on call that day.
