Planning and applying
As much notice as possible for the decision to go LTFT, appreciate that this is not always possible. Once the decision is made its important to speak to the RIGHT people EARLY. This is a good time to meet with Educational Supervisors (ES) and Training Programme Directors (TPD) to discuss practicalities. You will need to complete the Health Education Yorkshire and Humber (HEYH) paperwork. This is easy to do and the LTFT email at HEYH (LTFTSouth.YH@hee.nhs.uk) is very responsive.
Eligibility and further information regarding LTFT can be found here: https://www.yorksandhumberdeanery.nhs.uk/learner_support/policies/less_than_full_time
If you are taking an extended period of time away from work now is a good time to consider KIT/SPLIT days, familiarise yourself with the HEYH RTW policy (share link) and browse the support website looking at the courses available to you to help with being away from work and transitioning back to work.
?Include here to contact professional bodies re: fee reductions/suspensions. It is also important to keep in touch with HEYH and the trust during this time so that you can make them aware of changes that may have occurred. (? give email?)

Approximately 8-12 weeks before returning to work (if known)
You will need to inform the medical workforce team of expected date of starting. This is important for calculating any annual leave remaining. The Medical Workforce team at TRFT will also be able to provide you with your generic and personalised work schedule, as well as indicate your pay for the forthcoming job. ?Put in a link for all the numbers and names of MWF? (MWF have an intranet page but not a public page so we'd probably need to get permission to put their contact details on here).
Meetup with your ES and TPD. These meetings provide a good opportunity to plan your educational needs and activities and appreciate the current departmental challenges.
It is also a good time to reinstate professional memberships and if eligible, apply for discounted fees. (?Maybe have a whilst you are off section?)
After meeting your ES and TPD and receiving your work schedule from the Medical Workforce Department, now is a good time to reflect on the challenges you may face and thinking in advance of solutions. Depending on the reason for being LTFT will depend on your specific needs but these may include:

- having robust childcare in place and a plan for an emergency situation
- if you have to attend multiple hospital appointments and the majority fall on one specific day, choosing that day as a non-work day.
Working and Training
- Organisation is KEY-make this big! It is important to be as organised in all aspects of life to make things as easy as possible.
- Work/shifts
- Training
- Reason for LTFT (childcare, appts, etc)
