Student AssistantshipThe Student Assistantship is a period of training, described in Tomorrow's Doctors 2009 (TD2009) section 109, ‘in which a student, assisting a junior doctor and under supervision, undertakes most of the duties of an F1 doctor’.
It is a 5 week period for you after your exams during which we aim to:
|
We will try to place students on to the Team that they will be working with in the future but in many cases this won’t be possible and the attachment shouldn’t be viewed as an ‘induction’ into a post but rather to learn more ‘generic’ F1 skills.
To make it work it’s important that the student becomes part of the Team asap and shadows the F1 as much as possible. As part of this we aim to give you the IT access you need for EPR. You should be involved on the wards like an F1, undertake clinical procedures, make sure you understand prescribing issues (both drugs and iv fluids), experience task prioritisation, work out of hours etc.
We will also provide students with some other teaching in terms of simulation exercises (read more about Simulation Courses) and the availability of Clinical Skills updates but the majority of time should be with the F1.
In addition to the clinical experience there is assessment at the end of the attachment in the form of 360 evaluation by the Team with input from the Consultant, F1 and senior ward nurse. The assessment will be of professional behaviours using a Team Assessment of Behaviour format.
Consultants, F1 doctors and Senior Nursing staff have been informed about the Student Assistantship and their role and the learning objectives you have for this attachment.
