Services
The department of Ophthalmology in Rotherham and Barnsley offers a general Ophthalmic  service covering all sub-specialties except surgical vitreo-retinal and ocular oncology for both children and adults. The hospital offers outpatient services and day surgery as well as few inpatient beds; emergency admissions and inpatient services are provided at Rotherham for both Rotherham and Barnsley patients.

There are a number of specialist services in both hospitals:


General Ophthalmology: All consultants and middle grades in both units see general ophthalmology conditions

Glaucoma:  All consultants see glaucoma patients in both units as well as a nurse practitioner at Rotherham who sees stable glaucoma patients. Glaucoma surgery is provided at Rotherham by Mr M Jabir and the new appointee from September Mr O Rafiq and at Barnsley by Mr M Hassan. We have a dedicated team of orthoptists who contribute to the glaucoma service by managing the visual fields testing.

Cataract: Pre and post operative assessment is provided by 3 nurse practitioners in each unit. The referrals are via agreed regional guidelines via local optometrists. The surgical work mainly small incision sutureless phaco emulsificationis under topical anaesthesia is provided by most consultant colleagues in each unit. Astigamatism above 2 Dipopters are also treated along with cataract surgery.

Cornea:  Simple corneal conditions are seen by all ophthalmologists in both units , penetrating keratoplasty surgery is provided by Mr M Jabir at Rotherham and Mr Attia at Barnsley.

Oculoplastics: General oculoplastic cases are seen by all ophthalmologists however complex surgical cases and eye lid tumours are dealt with by Mr Jabir who is a member of the skin cancer MDT.

Medical Retina: Including macular degeneration treatment by intra-vitreal injections, diabetic retinopathy and vein occlusions are dealt with by a dedicated team based in Ward B6 of Rotherham hospital, consultant colleagues who specialise in Medical retina at Rotherham are Miss S Thakur, Mr M Shahin and Miss A Hammad as well as 3 of the Rotherham middle grade colleagues and a nurse practitioner. Miss Anne-Marie Firan in Barnsley helped by middle grade colleagues and a nurse practitioner runs the service there.  Diabetic screening for both units is run by Barnsley Hospital on behalf of the two CCGs, Mr A Ibraheim is our lead for that service
 
Paediatric Ophthalmology: Is managed by Mr Z Khan and Mr A Aqaba at Rotherham and by Mr M Attia at Barnsley. All other middle grades contribute to paediatric clinics and child refraction sessions, supported by a dedicated team of orthoptists who run adult motility clinics as well.  A plan to train orthoptists in refraction of children is underway as part of expanding their roles and release of doctors time. Strabismus surgery is provided at Rotherham by Mr Z Khan and Mr M Jabir while at Barnsley is provided by Mr M Attia. Retinopathy of prematurity screening is provided at both hospitals however treatment if needed goes to the SCH at Sheffield.

Laser Clinics: Argon laser for diabetic retinopathy and retinal holes as well as vein occlusions and Yag laser capsulotomy and iridotomy are provided by both units by nearly all ophthalmologists . Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is provided at Barnsley by Mr M Hassan.

Minor Operation Surgery: For eye lid cysts, lid deformities etc is provided by most middle grade colleagues in both units.

Low Vision Assessment: To support people with visual impairment is provided at  both units by the orthoptic team who run special clinics and support these patients with various devices like magnifiers, telescopes etc.

Ophthalmic Photography: We have a dedicated ophthalmic photographers who run fundus photography, anterior segment /external photography, Fluorescein Fundal Photography, Ocular Coherence Tomogrophy for both units.

Eye Clinic Liaison Officer: Employed by the borough council at Rotherham hospital who looks after all aspects of visual impairment including partial and visual impairment registration as well as liaising with social service.

Emergency Ophthalmic Service: We have dedicated eye emergency clinics every day run by middle grade colleagues in each unit. Out of ours emergencies are dealt with by first on call rota of middle grades and second on call by consultants from both units and is located at Rotherham hospital

Theatre facilities: Dedicated ophthalmic theatre in each hospital with the latest microscope with digital recording facilities and modern intraocular implants and state of the art phaco emulsifying machines.  A dedicated ophthalmic Theatre nursing team in each hospital.
